Recreation Aide

Hours of Work:   We are searching for casual team members to cover vacation requests and assist with larger events as needed. Available shifts include days, evenings and weekends as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Scheduled to cover vacation, sick days, and assisting with large functions and special events, as needed. Must be available days, evenings, and weekends
• Carry out hands-on activities in a courteous, compassionate, and enthusiastic manner which promotes a feeling of well-being and security in residents
• Implement meaningful, age-appropriate activities in a manner appropriate to residents’ abilities and which take his or her dignity & limitations into consideration
• Participates in team meetings and assist in the planning of programs with residents' interest in mind
• Assist with the preparation of monthly activities; distribute calendars and special event notices
• Set up program areas including moving tables and chairs, as required, and assists in transporting residents to and from programs, when needed
• Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 40lbs independently and withstand consistent physical activity such as bending frequently to pick up bean bags or bowling pins repeatedly for the duration of the program, up to one hour.
• Drive residents to scheduled and pre-arranged outings in the Adelaide van
• Report participation and feedback of residents to the Recreation Manager
• Maintain effective communication and good human relations with residents, families, volunteers and team members, keeping them informed of current and upcoming events
• Present a positive image of the residence to the public

REQUIREMENTS:
Previous experience working with seniors; involvement in retirement community preferred
• Available Days, Evenings and Weekends
• Smart Serve Certification
• Valid Ontario Class G Driver's license to transport residents by van
• Current First Aid and CPR certification an asset

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Diploma/Degree or Certificate in Recreation, Leisure Studies, Gerontology or equivalent an asset
• Creative, sociable and energetic with a positive attitude
• Skills and experience to add to our programming - music, dancing, fitness, art therapy, event planning
• Experience working with cognitive impairments including Alzheimer's and Dementia is beneficial
• Experience running exercise classes an asset
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Proficient computer skills, including knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher
• Able to work independently as well as in a team environment
• Display patient, understanding, respectful manner when responding to residents and visitors
• Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Criminal Background Vulnerable Sector Check
